Jimmi Johnson in a Career Slump

Jimmi Johnson in a Career Slump

For a seven-time champion, Jimmie Johnson hasn't had a good start to the NASCAR season. Case in point, he's had just one top-10 finish in six races. This includes a 15th-place finish at the recently-concluded Martinsville Speedway, where he entered riding a 28-race losing streak.

Jimmi Johnson's race at the Martinsville Speedway was supposed to be his chance of breaking out of his career slump. After all, he has nine victories at Martinsville. This is the most among drivers who are currently active. He entered the race on March 25 as one of the heavy favorites, but fell well short in the end.

When reminded of his losing streak that dates back to last June in Dover, Delaware, Jimmi did nothing but laugh.

Fans of the No. 48 team need not freak out. He remains one of the most consistent and successful drivers of his generation. He is a veteran who's simply working his way back to the thick of things and there's no doubt that Jimmi will be back to his winning ways in no time.

Hendrick Motorsports recently went through reorganization. The retirements of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., as well as the release of Kasey Kahne from his contract at the end of last season now leaves the team with just Johnson, Chase Elliot, Alex Bowman, and William Byron in its active lineup. Of those four active drivers, only Johnson has won a Cup.

Through six reasons this season, Jimmi Johnson sits 17th in the standings. He found himself involved in unfortunate crashes in all of his races at Daytona. Mired in a slump, it was not only until recently that Johnson finished inside the top 10 with a ninth-place finish at Fontana where he was racing in his home state of California.

Johnson is currently searching for his eighth Cup Series championships. He is currently tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for most all-time with seven.
