Dixon Wins In Long Beach For The First Time

Over the weekend, Scott Dixon won his first IndyCar Series Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach after taking the lead from Helio Castroneves, who took the pole sitter, early in the race.

Castroneves led the rest in the first 28 laps but was overtaken on the 29th lap by Dixon following a round of green-flag-stops. In addition to that Castroneves almost collided into another competitor on the track when he exiting the stall.

On the lap, 34 after the cycle of stops were completed Dixon moved into the first position. After taking the lead, Dixon, a three-time IndyCar Champion, only gave up the first spot during the race’s second round stop which occurred between the 54-57 laps.

It was not smooth sailing for Dixon as Castroneves gave him a fight for the first position till the end of the race. In fact, Dixon was almost overtaken by Castroneves after making his last pit spot. Dixon managed to contain Castroneves challenge and ended up finishing the line by 2.2 seconds.

"That pit stops exchange there definitely helped us get to the lead, but the car was fast and we needed to maintain it," Dixon said during a post-race interview. "All in all, this is huge, winning at Long Beach. I finally get to crack this one, and I'm really happy."

The win, which was Dixon’s 36th career win, moved him ahead of Bobby Unser to position 5 on the list of the series all-time race winners. The win was also the 98th victory that team owner Chip Ganassi has recorded in the IndyCar series.
