Christian Fittipaldi wins Rolex 24 at Daytona

Christian Fittipaldi, along with Joao Barbosa, and Filipe Albuquerque drove the Cadillac Prototype won the Rolex 24 at Daytona. This race was very significant for many reasons.  We are talking about 24 hours of racing non-stop where cars are remarkable for speed and rigor.

These are the stats of the Cadillac team.  Christian Fittipaldi, Joao Barbosa, and Filipe Albuquerque drove a No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi, and completed 808 laps for a total 2,876.48 miles.   These numbers are now cemented as records.

The car faced some overheating issues but it kept itself steady. This sturdiness is what largely determined the team's victory.  For the last nine hours of the race, No. 5 led the race. The runner-up hit the line 1 minute, 10.544 seconds after them.  This was the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi, driven by Felipe Nasr, Eric Curran, Mike Conway and Stuart Middleton.

The defending champion, No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi, suffered the consequence of a faulty radiator, which made them fall out and finish 45 out of 50 cars.   This was one race where several other cars had some malfunction issues that made them remain in the last positions.

“I really do believe that the fact we had very few yellows compromised a lot of the machinery out there and really put a lot of stress on a lot of cars,” said Fittipaldi, after him and the team claimed their third Rolex 24 victory. “Some cars started dropping off. Even ourselves, we had to baby it the last six or seven hours. We had a slight overheating problem.” Fittipaldi's impressions were that the race was so tough that within an hour, it went "from a sprint race to an enduro race."
