Three Car Racing Celebrities

Three Car Racing Celebrities

A lot of celebrities are known to be fond of car racing outside of their primary careers. Some even achieve a lot of success in the motor racing field. Here are three of them:

Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey is an actor and race car driver, best known for his role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy.

"McDreamy" has participated in some of the most well-known pro-am events out there! These include  the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race, and even the Rolex 24 in Daytona. Dempsey has been a co-owner of the Vision Racing IndyCar Series team. He owns Dempsey Racing, which has two Porsche 911 GT Americas racing in the  Tudor United Sports Car Series. He participates as much as he can, however, insurance restrictions have prevented Dempsey from driving competitively while filming. In 2009, he finished 9th in the 24 Hours of Le Mans's GT2 class; he drove a Team Seattle Advanced Engineering Ferrari F430 GT.

Bruce Jenner

After his Olympic triumph, but before the plastic gender-changing surgeries and Kardashians Reality TV Show, Jenner had a successful run in the 1980’s driving for the Jack Roush Ford Team. His peak performance was at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where he and his co-pilot Scott Pruett won the GTO class in a Roush Mustang. 1986 was the most successful year of Jenner's career finishing second in the GTO class championship.

Paul Newman

Newman got into motor racing because of a 1969 film role in “Winning”. From the mid-1970’s to the early 1990’s, he drove for the Bob Sharp Racing team, racing mainly Datsuns. At 70 years old, Newman became the oldest driver to be on a winning team in a major sanctioned race; he won his class at 24 Hours of Daytona in 1995. His last professional race was the 2007 Watkins Glen International, and in a 2008 race at Lime Rock arranged by friends. He reportedly still did 9/10th’s of his best time.
